Washington, D.C. — On midnight of Sept. 01, 2021, Texas S.B. 8 went into effect, banning abortion after six weeks and allowing individuals to sue an abortion provider or anyone who may have helped someone get an abortion for damages up to $10,000.
Latino Victory Fund President and CEO Nathalie Rayes issued the following statement:
“This regressive law threatens the health and agency of millions of Texans, especially Black, Latino and people with low incomes. It creates a vigilante system that puts a $10,000 bounty on every woman’s reproductive right. Abortion is health care, and abortion access is a constitutional right that is currently under attack in more than 20 state legislatures, which is why it must be protected like never before. Reproductive freedom is a fundamental right, and people should have the right to make their own life choices. It’s time we remind Republicans that their archaic, retrograde laws are unacceptable—we must vote them out.
“Latino Victory stands with our allies in the reproductive rights and justice space and with the 7 million Texas women and their families who will be affected, and we vow to support you in this fight.”
