Statement from Nathalie Rayes, President and CEO of Latino Victory Fund:

“Governor Lujan Grisham has put New Mexicans first by focusing on growing the economy, increasing job opportunities, improving education, and leading her state through the Covid-19 pandemic. Throughout her career, she has fought for issues that impact the Latino community and has demonstrated that she’s fearless in advocating for the people she represents. Whether leading the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, bringing her own chair to the table at the White House to advocate for immigrants, or implementing an effective, nationally recognized Covid-19 response in New Mexico, Governor Lujan Grisham has always led with grit, determination, and heart. Latino Victory is proud to endorse Governor Lujan Grisham for governor of New Mexico.”

Latino Victory first endorsed Lujan Grisham for governor in the 2018 election, when she made history by becoming the first Latina Democrat elected governor. She is currently the only Latina governor in the United States, which highlights the dire underrepresentation of Latinas in statewide government positions. With 31 million Latinas living in the United States, Latino Victory Fund continues strengthening its efforts to increase Latina representation in statewide elected office.

Meet Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham

In 2018, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham made history when she became the first Democratic Latina governor in our nation’s history. As governor, Lujan Grisham has continued her life’s work of improving the lives of all New Mexicans. While steering New Mexico through the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Lujan Grisham oversaw one of the most productive legislative sessions in the state’s history. Under her leadership, the legislature raised the minimum wage, negotiated the largest education budget increase in the state’s history, and overturned New Mexico’s constitutional ban on abortions.

Before being elected governor, Lujan Grisham served three terms in the United States Congress, representing New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District. During her time in Congress, Lujan Grisham served as chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and a member of the Budget Committee and Agriculture Committee. She passed legislation to assist New Mexico’s tribes, public schools and provide funding for law enforcement training. She also took on the Veterans Affairs Department to increase veterans’ access to health care, convinced the Social Security Administration to hire more judges, and held bureaucrats accountable for cleaning up a jet-fuel spill that threatened Albuquerque’s drinking water.

Before her tenure in Congress, Lujan Grisham served as cabinet secretary for three different New Mexico governors, overseeing the Department of Aging & Long-Term Services and the Department of Health. She also started her own small business and was elected to the Bernalillo County commissioners court.

Lujan Grisham is seeking re-election to continue providing the most good for the most people, particularly in the aftermath of COVID-19. In addition to running a statewide campaign, Lujan Grisham has the challenging task of serving as Democratic Governors Association chair. If re-elected, she will continue building on her successes. She will fight for quality education for all New Mexicans, diversify the state economy, and ensure access to quality and affordable health care for all New Mexicans.
