Latino Victory Project Statement on House Leadership Change: Immigration Reform Must Persist

[WASHINGTON]—In response to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s primary defeat, and his decision to step down from House Leadership, Latino Victory Project President Cristóbal Alex has issued the following statement:

“As an organization committed to seeing that the issues of the Latino community are heard and addressed in the political process, we do not want Representative Cantor’s defeat and resignation to serve as the pretext for inaction on comprehensive immigration reform. Tuesday’s results can hardly be seen as a referendum on immigration, when Leader Cantor himself campaigned on a platform of opposing immigration reform. And Congress is no less able to act on this important issue than it was the day before yesterday.

“Immigration reform is not a Latino issue.  It is not a Republican or a Democrat issue. It is an American issue of the highest importance that when addressed, will move this country forward.  Now more than ever, it is important that Speaker Boehner do the right thing and allow a vote on immigration reform before the August recess.

“We continue to hold out hope that more elected officials will promote American values such as creating a path to citizenship, but we stand ready to join with our partner organizations in mobilizing the Latino community against any obstacles to immigration reform.  Our community will neither forget nor forgive continued inaction on this important national problem that affects so many families, businesses and communities.”
