Position Description

The Development Director will be responsible for creating and executing a strategic fundraising plan for the organization, including supervising development staff, developing engagement strategies for the organization’s leadership and board of directors, and raising the funds needed for the organization to achieve its goals. Qualified candidates will be self-starting, motivated people who are highly trained in fundraising best practices and major gift development with the ability to steward and cultivate relationships with key donors and funders.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Develop, lead and monitor a strategic development plan for reaching the organization’s fundraising goals; 
  • Effectively communicate development strategy, progress to goals, and income projections to President, Managing Director and Board Development Chair and collaborate to reach desired outcomes; 
  • Successfully identify, initiate and cultivate relationships with prospective donors;
  • Build portfolios of current and prospective donors for designated members of the staff and the Board of Directors and create and implement strategies to support their fundraising efforts;
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with the donor community;
  • Create a robust donor prospecting pipeline strategy to expand the organizations prospect universe; 
  • Collaborate with the Managing Director and department leads to accurately and effectively communicate programmatic goals and updates with individual and foundation prospects and current donors;
  • Develop proposals and other donor facing materials and serve as primary liaison for grant proposals and reporting;
  • Plan and oversee the execution of email and direct mail solicitation programs;
  • Develop a plan for annual fundraising events and engage staff and board leadership to identify and recruit co-sponsors and event supporters;
  • Supervise development staff and make recommendations to the Managing Director for building the Development team based on organizational and budget growth.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Five – seven years of successful fundraising experience for non-profit organizations and/or political campaigns;
  • Experience using NGP and Act Blue;
  • Excellent written and communication skills including the ability to write grant proposals and promotional materials;
  • Strong networking capabilities and the ability to represent the organization in meetings with current and prospective funders;
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
