News and Updates

Washington, D.C. – Cristóbal J. Alex, President of the Latino Victory Project, issued the following statement after the confirmation of Steve Mnuchin as Treasury secretary.

“Tonight, Senate Republicans confirmed yet another unqualified individual to serve in Trump’s cabinet. Steve Mnuchin built his wealth by taking advantage of families dreaming of owning their own homes, many of them Latinos. Mnuchin directly profited from the turmoil of the housing crisis. At the helm of OneWest Bank, he ran a foreclosure machine, offering the worst loans to Latinos and forcing tens of thousands of families into foreclosure once the housing prices fell. All the while, Mnuchin was growing his now estimated $620 million fortune.

“Housing advocates have long spoken out against the ravages of denying financial services to communities of color, compared to the services provided to more affluent white neighborhoods serviced by OneWest branches. So much for draining the swamp. One thing is clear, Donald Trump is only looking out for his rich friends and not the middle class.”

Washington, D.C. – Cristóbal J. Alex, President of the Latino Victory Project, issued the following statement after the confirmation of Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

“With the confirmation of Rep. Tom Price as the new Secretary of Health and Human Services, Senate Republicans just put primary heath care services for over 4 million Latinos who depend on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in peril. Price has repeatedly voted to gut the Affordable Care Act, to take away access to birth control from women in need, and to defund Planned Parenthood, which is an essential provider for over 600,00 Latinos.

“It is clear that Price doesn’t understand the consequences of his actions. If Trump and Price are successful and repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement, millions of Latinos across the country will face even greater obstacles to access quality affordable health care, preventive care like cancer screenings, and sexual and reproductive health services. Latino Victory will fight to protect Planned Parenthood and to ensure that the Affordable Care Act continues to provide affordable, quality healthcare for our community and for Americans in need across the country. We will not sit back and let the Trump administration endanger the health of our community.”

Washington, D.C. – Cristóbal J. Alex, President of the Latino Victory Project, issued the following statement after the confirmation of Sen. Jeff Sessions as attorney general:

“Republicans were desperate to jam through Donald Trump’s extremist, rubber-stamp pick to be attorney general. Since being rejected by the Republicans in the Senate Judiciary Committee in the eighties, Sessions has doubled-down on his advocacy for legislation that disproportionately targets communities of color, infringing on our most fundamental rights like access to the ballot box. Separating Sessions’ rhetoric from his record is nothing more than a malicious fantasy Republicans continue to push.

“It’s clear that Coretta Scott King’s testimony continues to haunt Republicans. But her words could not ring truer than they do today: “We still have a long way to go before we can say that minorities no longer need to be concerned about discrimination at the polls. Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asian Americans are grossly underrepresented at every level of government in America.”

“Senate Republicans need to know that by confirming Jeff Sessions as the next Attorney General of the United States, they are putting our civil rights in danger and making America unsafe for communities of color. Jeff Sessions supports mass deportation, a Muslim registry, and he would roll back progress on LGBTQ and voting rights. As we’ve seen throughout his career, his anti-immigrant and racist convictions will continue to guide his judgment and make him unable to protect all Americans equally. We have no reason to believe that he will serve as an independent attorney general. He is simply not fit to serve.

“Latino Victory will persist every step of the way to ensure that our communities’ voices are not oppressed. We will not be silenced, and we will push back against injustice whenever and wherever we encounter it.”

Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. – Cristóbal J. Alex, President of the Latino Victory Project, issued the following statement after the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as education secretary:

“Today, fifty Republican senators failed the American people. These Republicans ignored thousands of people who called and rallied outside of their offices asking them to put the interests of our students ahead of their party. Voters will not forget that almost every single Republican senator voted for a billionaire who has spent her entire career and millions of dollars trying to privatize and defund public education. We will remember these senators’ names on Election Day: especially the ones who are up for re-election.

“Betsy DeVos is, without a doubt, one of the most unqualified candidates nominated to lead the Department of Education. For the first time in the history of our country, a vice president has had to resolve a tie for a cabinet member’s confirmation. Now is the time to cultivate the progressive champions who will run for local school boards across the country, especially in the Latino community. This fight is just beginning and we will not go quietly.”
