Washington, D.C. – Cristóbal Alex, president of the Latino Victory Project, issued the following statement in response to the decision by Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez to comply with federal immigration detention requests:
“Millions of immigrant families are already feeling the consequences of Trump’s attack on our community: from creating a deportation force and imposing an unconstitutional travel ban on Muslims, to putting law-abiding immigrants including DREAMers in danger of deportation, and now targeting cities that protect undocumented immigrants. This is after just over one week in office. It is in urgent times like these that we look to our elected officials to stand up for our community like we have seen from mayors across the country. From Los Angeles to Boston, from Chicago to New York, mayors are standing up against Trump’s threats.
“It is disappointing and incomprehensible that Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez would give in to Trump’s hateful demands. Miami has been and will continue to be a city of immigrants. Making Miami-Dade’s jails turn into immigrant detention centers will undermine basic community policing policies proven to decrease crime and protect the community. Look no further than the protests happening at airports from coast to coast — folks from all walks of life have rallied to protest the immediate effects of the Muslim ban. It is crucial for elected leaders like Gimenez and others to listen to their constituents and do the right thing to protect all of us impacted by Trump’s inhumane orders.”
Washington, D.C. – César J. Blanco, political director of the Latino Victory Project, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s executive actions on refugees today:
“It is disgraceful that Donald Trump signed an executive order restricting refugees, and on Holocaust Memorial Day of all days. Trump has sealed the doors of this country to thousands of refugees looking for a better life with a single stroke of a pen.”
Washington, D.C. – César J. Blanco, political director of the Latino Victory Project, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s executive actions on immigration today:
“The executive actions on immigration announced by President Trump today are simply un-American. President Trump’s executive actions go against the principles and values that our country was founded on and will only tear families apart. These executive actions seem to be part of his efforts to delegitimize our democracy and our values. We must respond to his actions by defending Latinos and all minorities from threats against our humanity.
“Let’s pause and take a moment to think of how history will judge these executive actions. Now is the time for allies to cast aside the privilege of silence and inaction, to stand with Latinos, Muslims, refugees, immigrants of all walks of life, and minorities fearful for their lives. Inaction has led to some of the darkest moments in our history, and we know that silence will protect no one. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
“We believe in the legacy of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. They are symbols of our nation’s promise to welcome all and build a country together — a promise Trump has committed to trample on. Shame on him for sowing the seeds of hate and division. We will not allow him to tear us apart and cast our communities as criminals just for the color of our skin. This is not who we are as a country.
“We encourage everybody to check in on their loved ones and the most vulnerable in their communities. Show up for them, and let them know that we will press through the times ahead more ferocious than ever defending our people and the soul of our country.”
Washington, D.C. – César J. Blanco, political director of the Latino Victory Project, issued the following statement after the confirmation of Xavier Becerra as the next California attorney general.
“We congratulate Xavier Becerra on his confirmation as California’s next attorney general. Xavier is a remarkable public servant who has demonstrated a commitment throughout his career to serve the Latino community, as both a state legislator and a Member of Congress. Xavier will be the strong and fearless attorney general that our community needs to defend against attacks from the Trump administration. Working families in California, and across the country, will be protected thanks to his work and dedication. We are confident that Xavier will lead the fight to ensure that everyone is treated fairly under the law.”
